Pune: Pimpri Chinchwad Wins Prestigious Platinum Green City by IGBC
Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) was honored with the Platinum Existing Green Cities award by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for its outstanding achievements in green sustainable development. The award was presented by Principal Secretary of Urban Development Ministry, Asimkumar Gupta, to Commissioner Shekhar Singh at a ceremony in Pune.
The accolades were given during the “Abhinandan 2024” program at Hyatt Hotel, Pune Nagar Road, celebrating Pimpri Chinchwad’s recognition as the second greenest city in Maharashtra by IGBC’s Green City Rating System. The city also received the prestigious IGBC Green Cities ‘Platinum’ plaque from the CII IGBC.
VK Environmental and Sprout acted as consultants for the entire project. Key contributors included Dr. Purva Keskar, Pranati Shroff, Tanaya Patil, Amol Umberje, and Suvarna Suravse.
The IGBC Platinum rating is awarded based on evaluations of green master planning, strategic initiatives, and the implementation of green infrastructure over two decades. The event also celebrated over 80 green building projects recognized as Green Pioneers, exemplifying innovation and sustainability.
Speaking at the seminar on Green City, Principal Secretary Asimkumar Gupta lauded the efforts of Commissioner Shekhar Singh for promoting an eco-friendly city and establishing a distinct identity for Pimpri Chinchwad.
Commissioner Shekhar Singh remarked, “It is a proud moment for all of us to be recognized as a Green City. Our efforts focus on sustainable practices, reducing carbon footprints, and increasing green cover. By restoring water resources, we are moving towards a cleaner, greener, and healthier city, inspiring other cities toward net-zero emissions.”
C. Sekhar Reddy, National Vice President of IGBC, highlighted the importance of green buildings and Pimpri Chinchwad’s role in leading sustainability efforts, serving as a model for other urban centers aiming to balance development with environmental conservation.
Sanjay Kirloskar, President of Kirloskar Brothers Limited, emphasized the city’s pioneering role in sustainable practices, reinforcing its identity as a Green City. Pradeep Bhargava, President of Greenco, praised the combined efforts of the community, industry, and government in achieving this milestone, setting an example for other cities.
Dr. Purva Keskar, President of IGBC, stated that Pune and its neighboring regions are emerging as India’s leading green cities, demonstrating that economic development and environmental conservation can coexist.
The “Abhinandan 2024” event marked a significant milestone in India’s green building movement, calling for cities to embrace sustainable development. Pimpri Chinchwad’s recognition as a green city adds momentum to India’s journey towards a greener and more sustainable future.
