Pune’s Tamhini records 340mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, heavy rain in ghats for the next 4 days
Pune’s popular tourist spot Tamhini ghat recorded a whopping 340mm rainfall in the last 24 hours and 545mm in the last 48 hours. According to Vineet Kumar, a noted weather scientist, heavy rain will continue in Pune’s ghat areas from 1st to 4th August.
Quoting IMD data, Vineet further said, with 29.3mm rain in last 24hrs, Pune Shivajinagar has recorded 394mm this July, making it the wettest July since 2012. Also July 2024 rain are double than the normal rain which Pune city gets in July.
On the other hand, Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting division, IMD Pune says, rains in Pune are expected to increase in intensity from the afternoon of July 31. He further says the city will receive moderate rain from 1st to 4th August with possibility of heavy rain even in the city on 3rd and 4th August. He says, Pune ghat areas will likely be on red alert for rainfall on August 03 and 04.
Meanwhile the district administration is constantly publishing alerts about the water release from various dams in the district. Almost all the dams are reaching capacity and hence are bound to release water to keep capacity for unforeseen rains as still two months of rainy season are left.
As of July 31 morning, Khadakwasla, Mulshi, Vadiwale and Panshet dams are discharging water into their respective rivers. The water discharge can go up and down depending upon the rainfall in their catchment areas. However, with weather scientists forecasting heavy rains in ghat areas of Pune, heavy water discharges are going to continue, atleast for the next few days.
Citizens are advised not to venture into ghat areas due to the possibility of landslides, rockfalls and flash flooding. Besides, those living near riverbanks are advised to exercise caution without panicking. Do not enter water bodies and also do not bridge which are prone to submerging or getting overtopped.
