In response to the continuing heavy rains and flooding, the State Education Minister, Chandrakant Dada Patil, has written to the Pune district collector to declare a holiday for all schools in the Pune district tomorrow, July 26. This decision comes as a safety measure for students, teachers, and staff.

The letter addressed to the Pune Collector, Dr. Suhas Diwase, who is also the head of the Disaster Management Authority, highlights the severe weather conditions affecting the region. The heavy rainfall has persisted over the past two days, leading to significant water releases from Khadakwasla and Pavana dams. This has caused flooding in the Mula and Mutha rivers, inundating low-lying areas, slums, and residential societies in Pune city.

Given the red alert for incessant heavy rains, the Pune district administration has decided to close all schools on July 26, 2024. This order covers schools in Pune city and talukas such as Mulshi, Maval, Khed, Velhe, and Bhor, which are experiencing particularly heavy rains.

Traffic disruptions and dangerous road conditions due to the flooding have made commuting unsafe. The announcement aims to prevent parents and students from risking their lives to attend school. The decision follows an earlier closure on July 25, 2024, which was not effectively communicated, causing inconvenience to many parents and students.

The administration has been directed to ensure that the holiday order is widely communicated through the appropriate channels to avoid any confusion and to ensure the safety of the school community.
