The release of water from Khadakwasla dam into the Mutha river bed has been increased to 22,880 cusecs, submerging the Bhide Bridge and the road along the river bed. Of the four dams in the Khadakwasla chain, Warasgaon dam is 95% full and Panshet dam is 94% full, indicating potential future discharges from these reservoirs.

The Water Resources Department and Khadakwasla Irrigation Department in Pune, along with the Central Flood Control Room, issued a cautionary notice on July 28, 2024, at 7:00 PM. The notice highlighted the following:

  • Khadakwasla Dam is 80% full, Panshet is 94% full, and Temghar is 78% full.
  • Pavana Dam, near Pimpri Chinchwad, is 84% full.
  • Citizens of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad must remain alert during the monsoon period.

Due to the forecast of heavy rainfall in the early hours of July 29, 2024, there is a likelihood of heavy discharge in the Mutha and Pavana river basins over the next 48 hours. Currently, both Khadakwasla and Pavana dams are discharging into the river beds. The discharge levels may be adjusted based on the amount of rainfall.

The notice advises:

  • Residents of Pune should avoid entering the Mutha River Basin.
  • Residents of Pimpri Chinchwad should avoid entering the prohibited Blue Line Area of Pavana River Basin.
  • Move any valuable materials or animals from these areas immediately.
  • Low-lying area residents should avoid the river bed.

Residents are requested to clear restricted areas of the Mutha and Pavana rivers by October 2024 and take appropriate precautions and remain vigilant.
