A recent study conducted by Central Railway’s public relations department has highlighted that Mumbai locals are the cheapest and speediest trains globally. This revelation underscores the exceptional value and efficiency of Mumbai’s suburban rail network.

Economical Travel Costs

According to the study, Mumbai locals offer remarkable affordability:

  • Second-class tickets cost commuters just 11 paise per kilometer.
  • First-class tickets are priced at Rs 1.25 per kilometer.
  • AC local tickets come to Rs 1.40 per kilometer.

The trains operate at an average speed of 45 kmph, positioning them as not only economical but also fast.

For regular commuters, monthly passes present even greater savings:

  • Second-class monthly passes reduce the cost to about 13 paise per kilometer for 25 days of travel, and 11 paise per kilometer for 30 days.
  • First-class passes cost 0.44 paise per kilometer for 25 days, and 37 paise per kilometer for 30 days.
  • AC local passes cost Rs 1.06 per kilometer for 25 days, and 88 paise per kilometer for 30 days.

Comparison with Other Modes of Transport

When comparing costs, Mumbai locals stand out as the most economical:

  • BEST bus rides average Rs 5 every 2.5 kilometers.
  • Auto rickshaws charge Rs 15.5 per kilometer.
  • Taxis cost Rs 18.6 per kilometer.

Despite occasional delays due to various disruptions, Mumbai locals offer an unbeatable combination of speed and affordability compared to other transport modes.

Massive Investment in Infrastructure

To further enhance the suburban network, several significant projects are underway:

  • Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP)-II: Rs 8,087 crore
  • MUTP-III: Rs 10,947 crore
  • MUTP-IIIA: Rs 33,690 crore
