Pune: MNGL Hikes CNG Price for the Second Time in Two Months

The Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) has announced a second price hike in two months for compressed natural gas (CNG) in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and nearby areas such as Chakan, Talegaon, and Hinjewadi. Starting from midnight on September 8, the retail price of CNG will rise by ₹0.90 per kilogram, bringing the rate to ₹85.90 per kg.

The price revision, according to MNGL, is driven by rising input costs related to the blending of market-priced and imported natural gas. While CNG prices continue to rise, MNGL emphasizes that it remains a cost-effective option, providing around 49% savings compared to petrol and 27% savings over diesel for passenger cars. Rickshaw drivers can still enjoy a 29% savings over conventional fuels, despite the hike.

The MNGL press release confirmed that while CNG prices are rising, the rates for domestic piped natural gas (PNG) will remain unchanged. MNGL pointed out that the increase in CNG costs is due to the rising international demand and import costs of natural gas.

This marks the second price increase since July, when CNG prices were raised by ₹1.50 per kilogram. Motorists, including rickshaw drivers, who once relied on CNG as an affordable and eco-friendly alternative, are now facing the financial strain from these consecutive hikes.
