Pune: PCMC Launches High-Tech Road Survey to Tackle Potholes and Improve City Roads
In a bid to create a pothole-free city, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has launched an advanced road survey project using automated technology to assess road conditions and address pothole issues. The survey, which covers the city’s 1,700 km road network, aims to enhance urban infrastructure and improve road quality through preventive maintenance.
The data collected from the survey will be integrated into the PCMC’s Geographic Information System (GIS) platform, allowing real-time monitoring and efficient road maintenance planning. This will help reduce the frequency of repetitive pothole repairs and optimize the city’s road repair budget. The first survey report is expected in November 2024, with annual surveys planned for the next three years.
Key features of the project include the use of a GIS-based mobile app to track pothole repairs, ensuring accountability among contractors and officials. The survey will record essential road parameters such as cracking, potholes, and rutting, providing data-driven insights for annual maintenance reports. Specialized teams will be deployed to conduct inspections and make timely interventions to ensure road safety.
PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh highlighted the importance of this initiative, noting that automated technology and GIS-based systems will enable timely interventions and budget optimization. City Engineer Makarand Nikam added that the use of advanced technology will provide accurate, real-time data to tackle problem areas effectively, ultimately improving the standard of living in Pimpri Chinchwad.
The project is seen as a significant step towards improving the city’s infrastructure and ensuring safer roads for its residents.
