Mumbai, September 12, 2024: Maharashra Public Works Minister, Ravindra Chavan has shared a good news for passengers traveling between Mumbai and Pune by train.

He informed that Central Railway has announced plans to speed up train services between the two cities. The railway authority has proposed the construction of two new railway lines from Karjat to Talegaon and Karjat to Kamshet, aimed at reducing travel time through the Lonavla-Khandala ghat section.

Currently, trains traveling through the Lonavla Ghat are restricted to a speed of 60 km/h. The new lines will bypass this section, allowing trains to run at speeds of up to 110 km/h. Additionally, the new lines will eliminate the need for a banker engine—an extra engine typically added to assist trains through the ghat section—saving 20 to 25 minutes per trip.

Once these lines are operational, the overall travel time between Mumbai and Pune is expected to be reduced by an hour. Moreover, the increased capacity will allow for more trains to run on the route, offering smoother and more frequent services for commuters.
