Mumbai, October 11, 2024: After a brief dry spell, heavy rains have returned to Maharashtra, bringing widespread showers across the state. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area has developed near Lakshadweep in the Arabian Sea, which is expected to intensify and move northwest over the next three days. This development is anticipated to result in significant rainfall across Maharashtra, with heavy showers and thunderstorms forecasted in multiple districts.

Rainfall Forecast and Alerts Issued

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and 14 other districts, indicating the likelihood of heavy rain. Thunderstorms and high winds are expected to accompany the rain in these areas, which include Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Dhule, Jalgaon, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Aurangabad, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, Hingoli, Nanded, Buldhana, Washim, and Yavatmal. The rain is likely to persist in these districts, particularly over the next two to three days.

In Mumbai, heavy rain accompanied by thundershowers began on Thursday evening. The IMD has warned of possible disruptions due to sudden downpours, and residents are advised to stay cautious.

Specific Regional Updates

  • Konkan and Goa: Moderate to heavy rain is forecasted for the next four days, with isolated thunderstorms and lightning in Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. Wind speeds may reach 30 to 40 kilometers per hour, prompting a yellow alert for these areas.
  • Madhya Maharashtra: Scattered light to moderate rain is expected over the next five days. Kolhapur and Satara districts may experience heavy rain at isolated locations along with thunderstorms and gusty winds. Yellow alerts have been issued for both districts, and other regions in Madhya Maharashtra may see similar weather patterns.
  • Marathwada: Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Jalna, Parbhani, and Beed are likely to witness light to moderate rain at isolated places, with rain intensity expected to increase in the next few days.
  • Vidarbha: Rainfall is anticipated in many districts of Vidarbha, accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and lightning. Hingoli and Nanded are expected to receive rain today, while Latur and Dharashiv may see rain tomorrow. A yellow alert has been issued for these regions due to potential stormy weather conditions.

Upcoming Weather Conditions

The IMD has noted that conditions are becoming favorable for the withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from parts of Maharashtra in the next two to three days. However, the formation of a severe low-pressure area over the Central Arabian Sea is likely to bring renewed rain to the state. In Pune and surrounding areas, generally cloudy skies are expected for the next four days, with light rain and thunderstorms anticipated.
