Pune reservoirs reach critical levels, caution issued along riverbanks, administration on high alert due to water discharge
Pune, August 3, 2024 – As Temghar, Panshet, Khadakwasla, Pavana and Mulshi dams have reached over 90 percent capacity and further red alert issued for tomorrow, there is a high possibility of heavy water discharge into the rivers passing through Pune.
Heavy rainfall in Pune district for the past many days has led to large amounts of water inflow into several major reservoirs, including Khadakwasla, Pavana, Mulshi, Chaskaman, and Panshet. The reservoirs are now nearing their full capacities, with Panshet at nearly 95% capacity. The substantial discharge from these reservoirs has prompted urgent action from the authorities.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has issued directives for the immediate evacuation of residents living in flood-prone and low-lying areas. The aim is to ensure public safety in light of the ongoing and expected heavy rainfall. NDRF and Army contingents have been informed to be on standby for immediate assistance if required.

Currently, the discharge rates are as follows:
– Khadakwasla Dam: 27,016 cusecs
– Mulshi Dam: 27,609 cusecs
– Pavana Dam: 5,000 cusecs
– Chasakman Dam: 8,050 cusecs
In a recent statement, Dr. Rajendra Bhosale from the Pune Municipal Corporation said, “I urge all citizens to be aware that Khadakwasla is currently nearly 90% full. A red alert has been issued, and according to the Irrigation Department’s notification, Khadakwasla is releasing 27,000 cubic meters per second, and Mulshi is releasing around 30,000 cubic meters per second. Given this situation, there is a significant risk of water entering areas such as Sinhagad Road, Sangamwadi, Harris Bridge, Dandekar Bridge, Vishrantwadi, Balewadi, and Baner. This discharge notice should be taken seriously to prevent any potential loss of life or property. In response to the emergency, municipal teams have been deployed to monitor and address waterlogging in vulnerable areas.”
