Pune, October 13, 2024: On the auspicious day of Dussehra, many Pune residents marked the celebration with new vehicle purchases, resulting in a total of 10,601 registrations at the Regional Transport Office (RTO). This number included 6,707 two-wheelers and 2,922 four-wheelers, besides many commercial vehicles such as rickshaws, buses, taxis, and goods carriers. However, a sharp decline was noticed in the registration of electric vehicles (EVs), with only 363 EVs purchased this year—a sharp 50% decline compared to last year.

Dussehra Auto Sales Trends and Festive Purchases

Since Dussehra is considered a festival that is auspicious for purchasing goods, including vehicles, gold and silver, as well as clothing, it serves as an important festival in Indian automobile sales. Many residents of Pune started booking their vehicles a month in advance, and this year, special importance was seen on fuel-based vehicles. Sustained interest for personal vehicles was seen, but the rate of buying of vehicles in general seems to have tapered off as compared with the numbers of last year. Further to this, the registration of EVs was also affected negatively, as 903 EVs were registered in 2023 while only 363 EVs were registered in 2024.

According to Pune RTO, the breakup of registered vehicles for this year includes 346 goods carriers, 261 rickshaws, 20 buses, and 231 taxis. The continued preference for traditional fuel-based vehicles is quite noticeable, as conventional two-wheelers and four-wheelers remain the most popular choices among Pune’s residents. However, as it has been the festive season, the RTO is preparing for continued registration in the next 24 hours, further contributing to the high demand for vehicles during this time.

As Pune celebrates Dussehra in all fervor, it becomes apparent that the city’s preferred mode of transport is indeed fuel-based, with some switching to the new electric vehicle technology. During the festive season, the trend in the registration of vehicles would, of course, remain under the spotlight at the Pune RTO as well.
