Mumbai: Santacruz-Chembur Link Road Extension Opening in January 2025
Mumbai’s much-awaited Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) extension project is now in its final stages and is set to open to the public in January 2025. A total of 100 metres of suspension bridge work is yet to be completed under the project, which is part of a cable-stayed bridge.
According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the work will be completed expeditiously as soon as traffic permission is received for this bridge. The construction of the bridge will be done in several phases, with the curved structure of the bridge being installed first, followed by suspension cables and road surface work.
The 4.2 km long extension project began in 2016 and was earlier targeted to be completed by 2019, but was delayed due to problems related to land acquisition, especially defence land. Recently, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has paid an amount of Rs 16 crore to the defence authorities, which is a major step towards finalising the project.
The extension stretches from Kapadia Nagar to Panbai International School and connects important places like Vakola Junction, Ambedkar Chowk, University Junction and BKC Junction.
This new route is expected to reduce traffic jams between Kurla and Vakola significantly, making travel easier in the congested areas of Mumbai. After receiving all the necessary permissions, completing the final phase, the route will be opened to the general public from January 1, 2025.
