Pune’s SPPU moves up 37 positions in QS Asia University Rankings Among Top 200 Universities

Pune, November 09, 2024: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has moved up 37 places to rank at 173rd position in the QS Asia University Rankings 2025.

It was ranked 210th in 2024 last year. This information was revealed in the 16th annual ranking released by Quacquarelli Symonds on Wednesday. SPPU is the only state university in Maharashtra to be included in the top 200 in the QS rankings, and the second institute from Maharashtra to be included in this list apart from IIT Bombay (ranked 48th).

SPPU Vice Chancellor Suresh Gosavi said, “We’ve also advanced in the southern Asia rankings because of significant strides in academic quality and research.” He said that raising the level of higher education and research is the main objective of the university. SPPU has collaborations with institutions in countries like Norway, France, Australia, which has improved research publications. Apart from this, the university is working closely with industries to increase employment opportunities. He said that this year SPPU’s performance has been the best in the last 10 years.

SPPU Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Parag Kalkar said on this achievement, “Congratulations to all the stakeholders of the University for achieving 173rd rank in the QS ASIA 2025 Ranking. This upward movement is a proud achievement for us. In Maharashtra State, we are the topmost State University once again. SPPU has always nurtured intellectuals and their contributions to the development of this nation makes me proud to be a part of this great University.”

According to the QS ranking, SPPU has increased scores in criteria such as papers per faculty, papers per citation, staff with PhD, international research network, and employer reputation, although there was some deficiency in outbound exchange. The university has scored 82.1 points in papers per faculty, but only 7.4 points in papers per citation. The standards of international students (score 12.5) and international faculty (score 2.5) also need improvement. Dr Kalkar also suggested that SPPU should improve faculty-student ratio and promote student and faculty exchange programmes.

Among other universities from Pune, Symbiosis International (Deemed) University has been ranked 216th in the QS Asia Rankings 2025, while its ranking in 2024 was between 261-270. Besides, Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed) University has made it to the list for the first time and has been ranked between 851-900.
