India’s telecom and internet sector, one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing markets, could soon see a major change. Elon Musk’s Starlink is preparing to launch its satellite-based broadband services in India. The company is currently in the process of securing the necessary security clearances to start operations in India.

India has the cheapest internet data in the world and Starlink’s arrival in India could create an upheaval in an already competitive market, currently dominated by Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio, Sunil Bharti Mittal’s Airtel, and state-owned BSNL.

Starlink’s Plans in India

Starlink aims to provide ultra-fast internet in India through its satellite-based internet technology. This could revolutionize internet connectivity for millions of Indians who live in rural and remote areas where traditional broadband services are unable to reach. However, there are many challenges before this come to fruitition.

India’s Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has confirmed that Starlink is in the process of obtaining necessary security clearances. The government has said it will ensure that Starlink’s data is stored entirely in India and that its satellite signals are encrypted and 100% secure. “When you check all the boxes, you get the licence. If they (Starlink) do that, we will be very happy,” Mr. Scindia said.

Starlink’s plans got a big boost when the government decided on administrative allocation instead of spectrum auction for satellite broadband services. The decision was in line with the likes of Elon Musk but was opposed by Mukesh Ambani.

Starlink vs Reliance Jio and Airtel

India’s internet market is currently dominated by Reliance Jio, which has over 14 million wired subscribers and about 500 million mobile internet users. Airtel, the second-largest player, has about 300 million subscribers. Despite their strong hold, the entry of satellite broadband could pose a new challenge for these telecom giants.

Jio and Airtel have spent over $20 billion in the spectrum auction, but now they could risk losing customers to Starlink’s advanced satellite-based services. However, according to reports, Jio is also preparing to launch its own satellite broadband service but has not made any announcement yet.

Pricing war: Will Musk be able to compete with Jio’s strategy?

The most important aspect of Starlink’s success in India will be its pricing strategy. Jio created a stir in the Indian market by offering free broadband services in 2016 and gained a large market share.

Elon Musk may adopt a similar strategy. In Africa, Starlink services are available for just $10 (about ₹800) per month, while in the US, the same services cost $120 (about ₹10,000) per month. Whether Starlink will be able to match or beat Jio’s competitive prices will be worth watching.

Starlink’s Future in India

Starlink’s entry into India could bring internet access for crores of people, especially in areas that have been deprived of digital connectivity till now. While Jio and Airtel have the advantage of their large market share, local origins and strong infrastructure, Starlink’s satellite technology could offer a unique advantage.

If Elon Musk’s company receives the necessary approvals and successfully launches its services, competition in India’s internet sector will intensify further, allowing consumers to benefit from better services and lower prices.

Starlink’s potential entry into India is not just a contest between Elon Musk and Mukesh Ambani, but a race to dominate one of the world’s most dynamic digital markets. For Indian consumers, this competition promises better connectivity options and technological advancements.
