This Season’s Malawi Mangoes Arrive in Mumbai: Read How Ratnagiri Alphonso Saplings Traveled to Malawi
Navi Mumbai: The much-anticipated Malawi mangoes from South Africa have made their way to the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) market, marking the start of an early mango frenzy for Mumbaikars. Known as the offspring of India’s famed Alphonso mangoes, Malawi mangoes arrived slightly later this year due to delayed flowering caused by extended rains in South Africa.
Despite the delay, the first shipment of 945 boxes of Malawi mangoes was sold out within minutes to markets in Crawford, Breach Candy, Matunga, Juhu, Ghatkopar, and even Pune, Delhi, and Rajkot. Retailers and consumers alike are eager to enjoy this premium variety during the off-season for Indian mangoes.
A Sweet History: From Ratnagiri to Malawi
The story of Malawi mangoes began around 14 years ago when Alphonso mango saplings from Ratnagiri were grafted and cultivated in Malawi. Over time, these trees have flourished across 600 acres, becoming a significant source of mango exports to India since 2018.
Key milestones in the journey of Malawi mangoes:
- 2018: 40 tons imported at ₹1,500 per box.
- 2019: 70 tons imported.
- 2020: Imports dropped to 15 tons due to COVID-19, with prices ranging between ₹2,500 and ₹3,000 per box.
- 2024: Smaller-sized mangoes dominate the yield, priced at ₹3,000–₹5,000 per box.
What Sets Malawi Mangoes Apart?
According to Sanjay Pansare, a leading importer of Malawi mangoes, these mangoes thrive during a unique harvest window from October to December, ensuring no competition with Indian varieties. The similarity in taste to the Ratnagiri Alphonso, coupled with their availability during the Indian off-season, has driven their popularity.
- Unique Attributes:
- Smaller size compared to Indian Alphonsos.
- Hot water treatment ensures high quality and minimal wastage.
- Distinct harvest period eliminates market clashes.
- Market Trends:
- Wholesale prices for Malawi mangoes range between ₹3,000 and ₹5,000 per box.
- Tommy Atkins mangoes, another South African variety, are priced at ₹3,000 per box.
A Promising Season Ahead
The Malawi mango season is expected to continue until late December, with shipments projected to increase. This Saturday, 2,500 boxes are expected to arrive, and weekly arrivals of up to 7,000 boxes are anticipated.
“As the supply increases, prices are likely to decrease, although they may not match the rates of Indian Alphonsos,” said Pansare. He added that next year’s yield is expected to be higher, as mango trees typically produce more fruit every alternate year.
Mangoes for Weddings and Gifting
The current wedding season has further boosted demand for Malawi mangoes, which are increasingly being chosen as premium gifting options. Retailers appreciate their rich taste and the absence of direct competition with local Alphonsos during this time.
For mango enthusiasts, the arrival of Malawi mangoes in Mumbai is a delicious preview of the summer season ahead.
