As the deadline for registering students under the APAAR (Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry) system approaches, the Union Education Ministry has urged educational institutions across India to complete registrations by November 30. This initiative is part of the government’s One Nation-One Student ID program, aimed at creating a comprehensive educational ecosystem registry, also known as the “EduLocker.”

To facilitate this mass registration, the state of Maharashtra has designated November 29 and 30 as “APAAR ID Days,” a special campaign to accelerate the enrollment process. As of November 25, only 65 lakh students, or 35% of the state’s student population, have registered for the APAAR ID, prompting the need for urgent action. The state’s Project Director for Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, R Vimala, emphasized the importance of these two days in ensuring the success of the initiative.

What is APAAR ID?

The APAAR ID system, launched in 2023 under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, provides a unique 12-digit identifier for each student. This ID helps track academic progress, co-curricular achievements, and simplifies record-keeping for students across all educational levels. Integrated with Aadhaar and DigiLocker, the system enhances security, accessibility, and transparency, making academic records easily transferable and verifiable.

Key Features of the APAAR ID System:

  • Unique Identification: A permanent 12-digit number for each student, ensuring a seamless academic journey from primary education through to higher studies.
  • Digital Record Keeping: APAAR ID allows students to store their academic records, including degrees, scholarships, and extracurricular activities, in a secure digital format.
  • Aadhaar Integration: Linking the APAAR ID with the student’s Aadhaar number enhances security and ensures authenticity.
  • DigiLocker Integration: Once registered, the APAAR ID is stored in the student’s DigiLocker, providing easy access to all academic documents.

Steps for Registration:

  1. Obtain Parental Consent: Schools must secure consent from the parents or guardians of students.
  2. Create a DigiLocker Account: Parents or guardians must create a DigiLocker account, linking it to their Aadhaar number for verification.
  3. Register for APAAR ID: Schools will upload student data on the UDISE+ portal, and the APAAR ID will be generated.

Challenges and Urgency Ahead of the Deadline

With less than two days to go, the state education department is intensifying efforts to ensure maximum registration. Schools are expected to conduct special campaigns during APAAR ID Days, supported by district and block-level officers. Education inspectors and officials from municipal corporations are also set to visit campuses to oversee the registration process and ensure compliance with the government’s directive.

Roles of Schools and Parents in the Registration Process:

  • Schools:
    • Verify and update students’ Aadhaar details.
    • Obtain parental consent for minors.
    • Upload student data to the UDISE+ portal.
    • Ensure registration compliance by November 30.
  • Parents:
    • Provide consent for sharing their child’s data.
    • Verify Aadhaar details for accuracy.
    • Engage with schools to understand the benefits and importance of the APAAR ID.

The Benefits of APAAR ID

  1. Streamlined Academic Progression: The APAAR ID makes it easier for students to transfer academic credits across institutions, ensuring smoother transitions through different educational stages.
  2. Improved Transparency and Accountability: By consolidating academic data in a centralized system, APAAR helps reduce fraud and ensures accurate and accessible records.
  3. Holistic Tracking: The system includes not only academic achievements but also co-curricular activities, providing a more comprehensive view of a student’s abilities.

Conclusion:

As the clock ticks down to the November 30 deadline, educational institutions and parents must work together to ensure that every student receives their APAAR ID. The initiative is a significant step in modernizing India’s education system, providing students with a reliable, digital identity to track their academic journey and achievements. The next two days—November 29 and 30—will be crucial in achieving this goal, as schools and education officials push to meet the targets set by the Union government.
