Mumbai-Pune Expressway Safer: RTO reports show 20% drop in accidents following safety initiatives
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, also known as the Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway, is now safer than ever. Recent reports from the Pimpri Chinchwad Regional Transport Office (RTO) show a significant 20% drop in accidents, reflecting improved road safety measures. Authorities attribute this positive trend to round-the-clock patrolling, driver awareness campaigns, and advanced traffic management systems.
Data from January to September this year highlights a clear improvement compared to the same period in 2023:
Major accidents decreased from 48 in 2023 to 37 in 2024. Fatalities fell from 55 to 41, marking a noteworthy reduction in lives lost. These statistics indicate that the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is safer, thanks to proactive safety initiatives.
Several key measures have contributed to the enhanced safety on the expressway:
Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS): Implemented in July, this system uses AI-enabled cameras to monitor traffic violations. Drivers caught overspeeding or violating lane discipline are penalized, leading to smoother traffic flow.
Driver Counselling Programs: These programs focus on educating heavy and long-distance vehicle drivers about road safety.
Regular Monitoring: RTO teams patrol the expressway 24/7, with a strong focus on night-time surveillance.
Key Causes of Accidents Addressed
To make the Mumbai-Pune Expressway safer, authorities have targeted common causes of accidents, such as:
- Overspeeding
- Not wearing seat belts
- Lane-cutting
