PUNE – In a decisive move, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has announced the demolition of 20 illegal scrap godowns in Kudalwadi as part of the first phase of its crackdown on unauthorised units. A total of 70 illegal establishments have been identified, with 50 more slated for demolition in the second phase. These units are located on an 18-meter road and reserved land, posing safety risks and causing traffic congestion.

PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh clarified that this action is a pre-planned initiative and not directly related to the recent massive fire incident in Kudalwadi, where 40 to 50 scrap godowns were gutted, causing severe air pollution. The fire incident, which occurred on December 9, had drawn attention during a special session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, raised by Bhosari MLA Mahesh Landge.

“The illegal scrap godowns occupy land reserved for critical 18-meter roads connecting major thoroughfares in Kudalwadi. To address current traffic congestion, the structures on these roads will be demolished in the first phase. In the second phase, units on reserved lands will be cleared,” Singh stated. He added that measures are being implemented to prevent new scrap centres from being established in the affected areas.

Demolition work is set to begin within weeks, targeting units operating without permissions and fire safety compliance.
