The long-pending proposal to expand the Pune-Mumbai Expressway is poised to receive Maharashtra state cabinet approval within the next two months, officials have confirmed. The project aims to widen the 94-km expressway from six lanes (three lanes in each direction) to eight lanes, addressing the growing traffic congestion.

Originally submitted last year, the proposal faced delays primarily due to state elections. “All stakeholder recommendations are in place, and we anticipate the cabinet will clear the project soon. Further delays are unlikely,” said a senior official from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).

Expansion Plans and Cost

The project involves adding one lane in each direction, requiring approximately 100 hectares of additional land. This expansion will also include the construction of eight tunnels — four in each direction — at key locations such as Madap, Bhatan, and Kamshet.

The widening will be executed in two phases and is expected to be completed within three years of approval. MSRDC estimates the total cost, including land acquisition and construction, at ₹5,000 crore. The initial phase is expected to receive ₹2,500 crore upon approval.

Traffic Growth and Public Demand

Since its inauguration in 2002, the Pune-Mumbai Expressway has seen a steady annual traffic growth of 5%. It now accommodates 60,000-70,000 vehicles daily in each direction, with weekend volumes reaching up to 90,000 vehicles.

“The proposal to expand the expressway comes 21 years after it was first opened to the public. Traffic congestion and the increasing number of accidents make this project crucial,” noted another MSRDC official.

Citizens have expressed support for the expansion. A Pune-based businessman, described current travel conditions as stressful due to persistent traffic jams, while another Mumbai resident who frequently visits Pune, emphasized the need for immediate action. “The additional lanes will make travel faster and safer,” she said.

Timeline and Expectations

The proposal was initially discussed during the state assembly’s winter session last year, prompting MSRDC to refine the plan. Officials are now optimistic that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will expedite the process. Once approved, the project promises significant improvements in travel efficiency and road safety for thousands of daily commuters.
