In 2024, metro networks across India experienced remarkable growth, revolutionizing urban commuting. Major cities like Bengaluru, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur witnessed the launch of new metro lines, station inaugurations, and even groundbreaking innovations such as Kolkata’s underwater metro. These developments have not only eased traffic congestion but also improved connectivity, marking a significant milestone in urban transportation.

Bengaluru’s Green Line Extension

Bengaluru’s Namma Metro expanded with the Green Line extension from Nagasandra to Madavara, which opened on November 7. The 3.14-kilometer stretch includes three new stations—Manjunathanagar, Chikkabidarakallu, and Madavara (BIEC). This extension has reduced traffic on Tumkur Road and serves around 44,000 passengers daily, enhancing commute efficiency for thousands.

Nagpur’s Indora Square Station Completion

Nagpur’s Indora Square Metro Station, part of the Orange Line, opened in November 2024, completing Phase-1 of the Nagpur Metro. Despite delays due to land acquisition challenges and safety inspections, the station now connects all 38 stations, offering seamless travel for city residents.

Kolkata’s Underwater Metro and Orange Line Expansion

Kolkata made history with India’s first underwater metro service, inaugurated on March 6, 2024. This engineering marvel includes a 520-meter tunnel under the Hooghly River, connecting Howrah and Kolkata in just 45 seconds. In addition, Kolkata’s Orange Line (Kavi Subhash to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay) began operations in March, providing enhanced connectivity across the city and laying the foundation for its complete rollout by 2026.

Mumbai Metro Line 3: A Leap Forward

Mumbai’s Aqua Line (Line 3) debuted its BKC to Aarey stretch in October 2024. This 12.69-kilometer section links key transit points, including both airport terminals, and offers interconnectivity with Metro Line 1. The extension is part of a larger 33.5-kilometer project aimed at reducing Mumbai’s notorious traffic congestion.

Pune Metro’s Milestones

Pune celebrated the completion of Phase I with the Kasba Peth and Kalyani Nagar station inaugurations. The Kasba Peth station overcame challenges like protests and historic preservation issues, while Kalyani Nagar station improved connectivity with its integration into the city’s bus transit system and enhanced road-crossing facilities.

Paving the Way for a Connected Future

The metro expansions of 2024 are more than just infrastructural achievements. They symbolize a commitment to reducing urban congestion, providing sustainable transport, and improving the quality of life for millions. As these projects continue to develop, India is poised to become a global leader in metro rail networks.
