Pune’s Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard witnessed a significant influx of fruits and vegetables yesterday, with 90 trucks arriving from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. The increased arrivals of onions, potatoes, peas, and shevga (drumsticks) have stabilized their previously rising prices, while the rates of other vegetables and fruits remained mostly steady.

Major Arrivals and Price Stabilization

The wholesale market received:

  • Onions: 100 trucks
  • Potatoes: 40 tempos from Indore and Agra
  • Green chilies: 10 tempos from Karnataka, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh
  • Peas: 20 trucks from Madhya Pradesh
  • Cabbages: 5 tempos each from Karnataka and Gujarat
  • Carrots: 10 tempos from Rajasthan
  • Shevga (drumsticks): 5 tempos from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu

Other notable supplies included 600 sacks of satari ginger, 7 tempos of okra, 10,000 boxes of tomatoes, and 10 tempos of red pumpkin.

Decline in Leafy Vegetable Prices

The wholesale prices of leafy vegetables have dropped significantly due to abundant supply. The market received 1.5 lakh bundles of coriander and 70,000 bundles of fenugreek. Current wholesale rates per 100 bundles are:

  • Fenugreek: ₹500–₹800
  • Shepu (dill): ₹500–₹700
  • Spinach: ₹800–₹1,500
  • Mint: ₹300–₹800

Other leafy vegetables like amaranth, safflower leaves, and flax leaves also showed stable demand, with prices ranging between ₹300 and ₹1,500.

Rise in Fruit Prices

While vegetables witnessed price stability, certain fruits, including lemons, pomegranates, papayas, melons, and custard apples, experienced a price increase due to higher demand. On Sunday, the fruit market received:

  • 70–80 tons of oranges
  • 20–25 tons of pomegranates
  • 30–40 tempos of papayas
  • 1,000 sacks of lemons
  • 6 trucks of pineapples
  • 700 sacks of mangoes

“Despite the increased arrivals, items like lemons and pomegranates have seen a slight price hike due to high demand,” noted a senior commissioning agent.

Relief for Consumers

The increased supply has temporarily stabilized the prices of several items, ensuring steady availability during the festive season.
