Pune: Ajit Pawar Pushes for Shivajinagar Multimodal Hub Completion, Modern ST Stand Development, Road Repairs, and Improved Infrastructure
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has urged the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) to expedite work on the Shivajinagar Multimodal Hub project, which has been stalled for over five years. This hub, being developed under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model, aims to integrate metro, bus, and railway services, creating a seamless commuting experience for travelers in Pune.
Progress and Key Developments
The Pune Metro has already completed constructing a metro station at the site, but approval from the MSRTC is pending to use the remaining land for the multimodal hub. On Monday, Shivajinagar MLA Siddharth Shirole met with Ajit Pawar to discuss the project’s urgency. Pune Metro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar, MSRTC officials, and other key stakeholders were also present at the meeting.
Shirole emphasized the need for swift action, stating that the memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the BOT-based development is in its final stages. “The new hub will ensure integration of the Pune Metro station, Pune Metro Line 3, the ST depot, and the railway station. This will not only improve commuter convenience but also provide space for commercial activities,” said Hardikar.
Background and Vision
The Shivajinagar ST bus depot was temporarily relocated to Wakdewadi in 2019 to facilitate the construction of the underground metro station. The original plan included rebuilding the ST depot, a metro station, and a multimodal hub at the Shivajinagar site. However, disagreements and delays slowed progress. Once completed, the hub will feature modern amenities, providing a sustainable and commuter-friendly solution.
Ajit Pawar has spoken with Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik to fast-track the signing of the MoU. This agreement will formalize the joint development efforts between Maha-Metro and MSRTC. The new ST stand at Shivajinagar will have a long-term, efficient design to handle traffic better and improve passenger convenience.
Road Repairs and Citizen Engagement
Apart from the multimodal hub, Pawar has directed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to address road repairs and safety hazards in Shivajinagar and across Pune. Responding to citizen inputs gathered by MLA Shirole, Pawar has instructed the administration to prioritize fixing potholes, removing encroachments, and ensuring better road safety.
Shirole acknowledged the importance of public participation in highlighting these concerns and assured citizens that concrete steps are being taken to improve infrastructure.
