Mumbai: The Vande Bharat Express, hailed as one of India’s fastest and most luxurious trains, faced an unusual incident during its journey from Mumbai to Goa on Monday morning. Due to a signal malfunction, the train ended up on the wrong route, causing a delay and inconvenience for passengers.

The train, which departed from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) at 5:25 AM, was scheduled to reach Goa’s Margao station by 1:10 PM. However, a fault in the signal and telecommunication system at Diva station diverted the train towards Kalyan instead of Panvel. The issue originated at point number 103 on the Diva junction down fast line.

A 22-Kilometer Detour and Reverse Journey

Realizing the error, railway officials acted quickly to minimize further disruption. The train was stopped at Kalyan, then driven in reverse to Diva junction, thanks to its driving units at both ends. It was finally rerouted towards Panvel, allowing it to resume its journey to Goa.

This unexpected detour added approximately 22 kilometers to the journey, including an 11-kilometer reverse drive. Overall, the train was delayed by over 90 minutes, leaving passengers frustrated. The delay also impacted other train services in Mumbai, including two mail/express trains and a suburban train.

Passengers Left Waiting

While the train halted at Diva for 35 minutes, efforts were made to ensure passengers were not stranded for a prolonged period. Despite these measures, passengers headed to Goa, especially those traveling for Christmas, faced considerable inconvenience.

Signal Fault Under Investigation

Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer (PRO) Swapnil Nila attributed the issue to a failure in the signalling and telecommunications system at Diva junction. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the malfunction. Officials assured that measures will be implemented to prevent such incidents in the future.

The Mumbai-Goa Vande Bharat Express, known for its efficiency, typically takes 7 hours and 45 minutes to complete its journey without disruptions. It operates six days a week, serving as a premium travel option along this popular route.
