Maharashtra Weather Update: Red alert for rain in Mumbai, Pune, Satara and many other districts, CM takes stock

The monsoon has become active since past two over Maharashtra after a prolonged subdued period of activity. Consequently, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued different alert levels for different regions of the state.

A red alert has been issued for heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy downpours at isolated places on July 08. The affected districts include Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, and Satara. An orange alert has been issued for heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. The districts under this alert are Palghar, Thane, Kolhapur, Akola, Amravati, and Yavatmal. Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for the entire state of Maharashtra, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, heavy rain, and strong winds.

Pune District Administration Warning

The Pune district administration has issued a warning following the Meteorological Department’s prediction of very heavy rain at some places in the district today, July 8, within the next three hours. Citizens are advised to take proper precautions to ensure their safety during this period. The district administration has urged everyone to stay informed and prepared. Rainfall in Maharashtra

The IMD has forecasted heavy rain in Maharashtra over three to four days. The MeT department indicated that heavy rain will impact the Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada regions from July 8 to July 10, 2024.

Mumbai Battles Heavy Rains: Key Developments

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde shared the developments and the precautions being taken for Mumbai in the wake of IMD forecasts and high tides.

• Rainfall and Preparations: Mumbai has received 267 to 300 mm of rainfall overnight, prompting a 24-hour alert across the city. Mumbai Municipal Corporation has ensured proactive measures including drainage capacity enhancement through holding ponds and micro-tunneling experiments.
• Flood Management: A flood gate is being installed at Mithi river to prevent seawater ingress during high tides. Seven pumping stations are set up to divert excess water back to the sea, ensuring minimal impact on residents.
• Government Response: In response to the heavy rains, Mumbai’s officials, including City Guardian Minister Deepak Kesarkar and Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, have reviewed the situation. The Meteorological Department issued an orange alert, advising citizens to venture out only when necessary.
• Emergency Preparedness: Efforts are underway to clear waterlogged roads, restore railway services, and provide alternative transport through BEST buses. The emergency response system remains on standby to assist residents as needed.
