FASTag Mandatory in Maharashtra from April 1, 2025: What You Need to Know
Starting April 1, 2025, all vehicles in Maharashtra will be required to pay tolls exclusively through the FASTag system, as per the state government’s latest directive. This decision, approved by an amendment to the “Public Private Partnership Policy 2014,” aims to enhance convenience and reduce delays at toll plazas. Here’s everything you need to know about FASTag and how it works.
What is FASTag?
FASTag is an electronic toll collection system developed under the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). It is a sticker tag affixed to a vehicle’s windscreen that enables automatic toll payments using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.
When a vehicle equipped with a FASTag passes through a toll plaza, the RFID scanner detects the tag and deducts the toll amount directly from a linked bank account or digital wallet. This eliminates the need for cash transactions and helps motorists save time and fuel.
Currently operated by 23 banks across India, FASTag simplifies toll payments while reducing manual intervention.
How Does FASTag Work?
Installation: The FASTag sticker is placed on the vehicle’s windscreen and linked to a prepaid account.
Automatic Payments: When the vehicle passes through a FASTag-enabled toll plaza, the RFID system scans the tag and deducts the applicable toll from the account.
Notifications: Users receive SMS or email alerts about toll deductions, helping them keep track of their expenses.
Though the system aims for seamless travel without halting, heavy traffic and compliance issues may still cause brief delays at some toll gates.
