In a move to enhance mobile security and curb fraudulent activities, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed major telecom operators—Airtel, Jio, BSNL, and Vodafone Idea—to expedite the rollout of the Caller Name Presentation (CNAP) service. This initiative aims to provide users with a safer communication experience by displaying the caller’s verified name, sourced from KYC (Know Your Customer) data, on the recipient’s phone screen.

CNAP: A Game-Changer in Caller Identification

The CNAP service, currently in its trial phase, is poised to transform how users identify callers. Unlike third-party apps like Truecaller, which rely on crowdsourced data, CNAP leverages the caller’s verified details from SIM registration. This ensures greater accuracy and reliability, reducing the risk of fraud and fake calls.

While this service promises significant benefits for smartphone users, it will not be available for those using 2G feature phones.

Stricter SIM Verification to Complement CNAP

Alongside CNAP, the DoT is tightening regulations on SIM card issuance to prevent misuse. Telecom companies are now required to perform Aadhaar biometric verification before issuing new SIM cards. This measure ensures that SIM cards are not issued using fake documents, further safeguarding users against fraud and unauthorized activities.

Why CNAP Matters

CNAP is more than just a caller ID feature; it represents a step toward building a secure and transparent telecom ecosystem. Key benefits include:

Reduced Fraud: Verified caller names will deter scammers and fake callers.

Improved Trust: Users can trust that incoming calls are from legitimate sources.

Enhanced Smartphone Experience: By displaying accurate caller information, CNAP will make communication safer and more efficient.

The Road Ahead

With CNAP and stricter SIM registration processes, the DoT is laying the groundwork for a more secure telecom landscape in India. These measures aim to protect millions of subscribers, ensuring that their communication experience is not only convenient but also safe.

As the telecom sector embraces these advancements, users can look forward to a future with fewer fake calls and greater peace of mind.
