The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) officials disclosed on Wednesday that land acquisition for the 138km-long Pune outer ring road project is expected to be completed by March 2025, with full operations of the road scheduled to commence by Sept 2027.

Anilkumar Gaikwad, Vice-chairman and managing director of MSRDC told media persons that following a recent review meeting with chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, revised timelines were established for both land acquisition and operational phases of the project.

“These timelines will be followed and necessary directions have been given to the local officials,” he said.

The ambitious roadways infrastructure project spanning across 83 villages is divided into eastern and western alignments. It aims to reduce traffic congestion significantly within Pune city. The eastern alignment comprises a 74.08km stretch from Urse on the Pune-Mumbai expressway to Shivare on the Pune-Satara highway. The western alignment encompasses a 64.45km circular road connecting Shivare back to Urse.

After land acquisition, we anticipate approximately two-and-a-half years for construction. We have targeted Sept 2027 for full operations,” Gaikwad said.

The project requires the acquisition of 143 hectares for the eastern phase and 64 hectares for the western phase in Maval, Khed, Purandar and Haveli talukas in the east and Mulshi, Haveli and Bhor talukas in the west.

Pune district collector Jitendra Dudi has already forwarded a request for Rs. 800 crore to the state govt to facilitate land acquisition in several villages. MSRDC officials have assured that funding poses no constraint, with loans secured from Hudco for the infrastructure project.

“Contractors have already been appointed for various stretches. The bidders have commenced evaluation of their assigned sections,” an official said.

Local residents, however, have expressed concern over previous delays, particularly during the 2024 elections when official work was temporarily suspended. They are urging authorities to expedite the project, which is designed to provide heavy vehicles direct access to highways without entering central Pune.
