What is GBS?

GBS is a rare but treatable neurological condition where the immune system attacks the nerves, leading to:

  • Weakness in the limbs, neck, face, and eyes.
  • Tingling or numbness.
  • Difficulty walking, swallowing, or breathing in severe cases.

The illness typically starts suddenly and may progress over four weeks. Severe cases may require intensive care, including ventilator support and treatments like IVIg or plasma exchange.

How Does Campylobacter Cause GBS?

Campylobacter Jejuni infection, often from consuming contaminated food or water, is linked to GBS. Symptoms of Campylobacter infection include:

  • Diarrhea (sometimes bloody)
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fever
  • Nausea or vomiting

In some individuals, the immune response to the bacteria can mistakenly attack the nerves, causing GBS within 1 to 3 weeks. Other known triggers include dengue, chikungunya, and certain bacterial infections.

The Neurological Society urges the public to seek prompt medical attention if they experience any symptoms of Campylobacter infection.
