India and China have announced the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in the summer of 2025. Rekindling Ties After Border Tensions

The pilgrimage, which has been on hold since 2020, is seen as a people-centric initiative to rebuild trust between the two nations. The announcement was part of a broader agreement to reinstate direct flights and enhance cooperation on transborder rivers, showcasing a commitment to stabilizing ties.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized the importance of “systematic reviews of bilateral ties” and implementing policies that prioritize public diplomacy. The year 2025, marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and China, is expected to feature renewed efforts to foster understanding and cooperation.

Hydrological Data Sharing and Economic Collaboration

During the discussions, both sides agreed to hold an early meeting of experts to discuss resuming the provision of hydrological data and other river-related cooperation. This move aligns with India’s focus on ensuring transparency and predictability in its economic and trade engagements with China.

Foreign Secretary Misri also addressed concerns about restoring functional exchanges across multiple sectors. NSA Ajit Doval’s earlier visit to Beijing, as part of the boundary Special Representatives dialogue, laid the groundwork for these renewed discussions.

PM Modi and Xi Jinping’s Vision

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping had highlighted the importance of resolving boundary disputes peacefully during their meeting in Kazan in October 2023. Their discussions emphasized creating a positive environment for cross-border cooperation, including the reinstatement of the Yatra and facilitating border trade.

The disengagement in Demchok and Depsang has allowed patrolling activities to resume after four and a half years, underscoring both nations’ commitment to maintaining tranquility in disputed areas.

Looking Forward

The resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a symbolic yet strategic step toward strengthening ties between India and China. By focusing on initiatives that directly impact their citizens, both countries aim to build mutual trust and foster long-term collaboration.
