Meeting Consumer Needs with Simpler Plans

Millions of Indian users, particularly those relying on basic mobile services or maintaining secondary SIM cards, have long demanded affordable, non-data-inclusive plans. TRAI’s mandate under the Telecom Consumers Protection (Twelfth Amendment) Regulations addresses this by encouraging operators to offer plans tailored to actual user needs.

Plan Details: Affordable Options for Every Budget

Airtel: Airtel’s annual pack, priced at ₹1,849, offers unlimited calls and 3,600 SMS over 365 days at a daily effective cost of ₹5.06. For users seeking shorter commitments, the ₹469 plan provides 84 days of validity with unlimited calls and 900 SMS, costing ₹5.58 daily.

Jio: Known for competitive pricing, Jio offers a ₹1,748 plan with 336 days of unlimited calls and 3,600 SMS, at a slightly lower effective daily cost of ₹5.20. Jio’s ₹448 plan for 84 days also includes unlimited calls, 1,000 SMS, and access to JioCinema and JioTV, costing ₹5 per day.

Vi (Vodafone Idea): Vi’s ₹1,460 plan offers 270 days of unlimited calls and 100 daily SMS, with extra SMS priced at ₹1 (local) and ₹1.5 (STD). The daily effective cost is ₹5.41.

Broader Consumer Benefits

The revised regulations also allow Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs) to have extended validity of up to 365 days, compared to the previous 90-day limit. This ensures uninterrupted service for longer periods without frequent recharges. Additionally, operators must provide top-up vouchers starting at ₹10, enhancing affordability for budget-conscious users.

TRAI’s Consumer-First Approach

TRAI’s changes stem from a consumer survey highlighting the need for simpler and more affordable plans, especially in rural areas. By offering these targeted recharge options, telecom providers are aligning with the regulator’s vision to make services accessible and equitable for all.

This strategic shift not only benefits consumers but also enhances customer satisfaction and loyalty across India’s diverse user base.
