Mumbai Airport’s T1 Set for Transformation: Demolition Begins 2025, Flights Shift to T2 and Navi Mumbai
Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is gearing up for a major overhaul as its 58-year-old Terminal 1 (T1) prepares to be demolished and rebuilt from the ground up. The redevelopment, set to begin in November 2025, aims to future-proof the airport amid India’s booming aviation sector. The new terminal will open in phases, with full completion slated for 2028–29.
Flight Operations Shift Temporarily
During construction, flights originally handled by T1—primarily domestic services—will relocate to CSMIA’s Terminal 2 (T2) and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is expected to open later this year. Authorities plan to deploy tech solutions like DigiYatra (paperless boarding), self-baggage counters, and e-gates to streamline passenger flow. Additional staff will also be stationed to assist travelers during the transition.
A Modern, Sustainable Terminal
The revamped T1 promises to blend innovation with Mumbai’s coastal charm. The design will feature wave-inspired architecture, biophilic elements (think indoor greenery and natural light), and a sprawling two-million-square-foot layout. Once complete, the terminal will handle 20 million passengers annually—a 42% capacity jump. Sustainability takes center stage with district cooling systems, energy-efficient substations, and a state-of-the-art baggage handling system.
Passengers can also look forward to seamless connectivity: the new T1 will function as a Multi-Modal Transit Hub (MMTH), linking metro lines, underground bus stations, and road networks. While initially focused on domestic travel, the terminal will have provisions for future international flights.
Short-Term Pain, Long-Term Gain
Though the demolition may cause short-term disruptions, the upgrade aims to elevate Mumbai’s status as a global aviation hub. As one airport official noted, “This isn’t just a renovation—it’s a rebirth.” Travelers are advised to check flight updates closer to 2025 as operational shifts roll out.
