Pune: Many NGOs and concerned citizens came together this mother’s day to show their love and concern for our rivers and removed 25 kgs of plastic waste that was choking Mutha river.

Their press note shared by Ruma Agwekar with Punenow News goes like this:

Mula and Mutha are two sister rivers which have been flowing in the heart of the city for a long time. The story of the two rivers relate to the wisdom and riches of the old days. The river in older years flowed with a mystic which Pune City shows today. The rivers have experienced the tyranny of floods which spread into the city in 1961.

The rivers are known for  nurturing an earthly wisdom, a habitat to various birds, and romance to the hearts of many Punekari minds.

Flowing since ages, the Mula & Mutha rivers bring with them the riches and the wisdom of the great old Sahayadris to the plains of Maharashtra. Supposed to be as old as the Sahyadri mountains, some 6,00,00,000 years, they are older than the Himalayas and the Ganges. They have seen it all from the prehistoric times to the formation of modern cities.

In old chronicles, Mula and Mutha were considered as rich queens which show determination and fierceness. In reality the river Mutha is lovingly called ‘Muthai’ and it originates from the village Vegre in the western ghats while Mula originates at Muleshwar Devrai, a green forest in Mulshi.

The current day Mutha, near temple Panchaleshwar, Pune – the natural  peace and greenery is stressed by the pollution in and around it. The river has lost its luster and value due to daily disposal of garbage, chemical waste, excreta etc. The pollutants that have made their way into the small stream and have created a consistent problem to the residents and visitors. The then river Mutha has become a mere nullah and an area to decay which stinks and spreads to nearby localities.  All the pleas by the civic bodies, NGOs and societies have not deterred the miscreants from creating adverse situations.

It is important that the intelligent common man finds a thinkpad to bring back the purity and sanctity  of the  river Mutha. The people in the nearby area should cooperate with civic bodies and NGOs to restore its good health.

On Mother’s Day, many NGOs, namely,  Vartul, Rotary Club Inner Wheel, Rotary Club Sahawas, Jivit Nadi, Bhumi, Green Life conducted a one hour cleansing drive and collected 25 Kgs of plastic waste.
