Kanpur, UP – A major disaster was averted on Sunday when an attempt to derail the Kalindi Express, traveling from Prayagraj to Bhiwani, was foiled in the Shivrajpur area near Kanpur. The train collided with an LPG cylinder that had been deliberately placed on the tracks, according to police reports.

The incident occurred around 8:20 AM. The train, traveling at high speed, hit the cylinder, which was thrown away from the tracks due to the impact. The loco pilot immediately applied emergency brakes, bringing the train to a screeching halt.

Local police, along with the Railway Protection Force (RPF), rushed to the site, initiating an investigation. Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Harish Chandra confirmed that the forensics team was also called in to aid the probe.

“The loco pilot spotted the cylinder on the tracks and applied the brakes. The train hit the cylinder before halting, but fortunately, the collision moved the cylinder away from the tracks, preventing a derailment,” said ACP Chandra.

In addition to the damaged LPG cylinder, police recovered a petrol-filled bottle and matchboxes from the scene, further indicating a conspiracy to cause a train accident.

The train remained stationed at the site for 20 minutes, later stopping at Bilhaur station for further investigation. Police are working to identify the culprits behind the sabotage attempt. The authorities assured that the suspects would face stern legal action.

This marks the second such incident in the region in recent months. On August 17, the Sabarmati Express derailed after hitting a boulder near Kanpur. In another incident in July, four passengers lost their lives when the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derailed in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh.

The investigation is ongoing, with both local authorities and the RPF collaborating to ensure the safety of railway operations in the region.
