Class 12 scoring system being revamped? To include marks from classes 9-11 as per PARAKH
PARAKH has proposed that the final report card for Class 12 should include a weighted entry from earlier classes: 15% from Class 9, 20% from Class 10, 25% from Class 11, and 40% from Class 12.
The Performance Assessment Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development (PARAKH), an independent unit of NCERT, has suggested that a student’s performance in both exams and ongoing classwork in Classes 9, 10, and 11 be included in their final marks at the end of Class 12, reported The Indian Express.
A recent report submitted to the Education Ministry by PARAKH, a unit established within NCERT to standardize school board assessments nationwide, recommends incorporating student performance from Classes 9, 10, and 11 into the final Class 12 marks.
PARAKH, created in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020), is tasked with capacity building, achievement surveys, and establishing uniform assessment standards across different school boards.
According to the Indian Express report, PARAKH has submitted a report to the education ministry this month that includes recommendations for standardizing evaluation procedures throughout all school boards, after consulting with 32 boards during the previous year.
The education ministry is advised by the PARAKH study to use a variety of formative assessments, such continuing class activities, group discussions, and projects, along with summative assessments, like term-end exams, in the evaluation process.
It has been suggested that performance from Classes 9, 10, and 11 be included on the final Class 12 report card, with a weight distribution of 15% from Class 9, 20% from Class 10, 25% from Class 11, and 40% from Class 12.
Additionally, the report suggests that 70% of class 9 results be formative and 30% be summative. It should be split 50/50 between formative and summative assessments in class 10. For class 11 thirty percent should be formative and sixty percent should be summative. The balance should change to 30% formative and 70% summative for class 12.
The PARAKH study will be distributed to all school boards for input. It also stated that officials from Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar participated in the first round of talks last week.
States presented a different approach to include class-wise performance during the meeting. They proposed that the final Class 10 score should be based on 40% from Class 9 and 60% from Class 10, rather than results from Classes 9, 10, and 11 being included in the final Class 12 report card.
In a similar pattern, 40% of the final Class 12 score and 60% of the Class 11 score should be used.
