Eknath Shinde Agrees to Join Mahayuti Govt as Deputy CM Amid BJP-Sena Power-Sharing Talks
In an important development, that promises to finally give the public of Maharashtra their elected government, Eknath Shinde has agreed to join the new Mahayuti government as one of two deputy chief ministers, alongside Ajit Pawar.
The government, likely to be led by BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis, will take oath on Thursday, marking a new phase in Maharashtra’s political landscape. The decision follows a key meeting between Fadnavis and Shinde at the caretaker CM’s Varsha residence on Tuesday evening.
The meeting came after earlier deliberations in New Delhi involving Union Home Minister Amit Shah. BJP’s central observers, Nirmala Sitharaman and Vijay Rupani, are expected to finalize the power-sharing formula after BJP’s legislature party leader is elected.
Sena sources indicate that portfolios, including the home department sought by Shinde, remain under discussion. Meanwhile, Sena leaders have stressed retaining their nine previous ministries, including industries and urban development.
Shinde, who underwent medical tests on Tuesday, assured reporters of his good health. Preparations for the swearing-in ceremony at Azad Maidan are underway, with the final cabinet structure to be determined post-oath.
As Maharashtra gears up for this political milestone, the Mahayuti government seeks to balance alliances and deliver governance amidst competing demands.
