Kalsubai, standing tall at 1,646 meters (5,400 feet), is the highest peak in Maharashtra and is aptly known as the “Everest of Maharashtra”. Located in the Western Ghats, within Ahmednagar district’s Akole Taluka, Kalsubai offers a captivating experience for trekkers, temple devotees, and wildlife enthusiasts.

The Trekking Experience

The Kalsubai trek is a popular activity year-round, particularly during the monsoon when the peak is enveloped in fog and strong winds enhance the adventure. The trek begins from Bari village, which lies approximately 6 km (3.7 miles) from Bhandardara. The route is well-marked and equipped with steel railings, chains, and ladders installed by locals to assist trekkers due to the challenging terrain.

The climb can be divided into three stages marked by ladders:

  1. First Stage: Carved steps and the first ladder cover the initial 1/3 of the trek.
  2. Second Stage: Following the first ladder, a combination of steps and another ladder brings trekkers to 2/3 completion.
  3. Final Stage: A plateau walk leads to the final ladder, finishing at the Kalsubai summit.

For safety and enhanced experience, many trekkers join organized trekking groups. These groups often provide certificates to those who successfully reach the summit.

Scenic Beauty and Cultural Significance

Kalsubai’s peak offers breathtaking panoramic views, including the Bhandardara Dam and the Arthur Lake, which benefits from the mountain’s extensive catchment area. The Kalsubai-Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary, where the mountain is located, is home to diverse flora and fauna, making it a hotspot for nature lovers.

The mountain’s name is derived from one of three tribal sisters: Kalsubai, Ratnabai, and Katrabai. Ratangad, another nearby peak, is named after Ratnabai.
