A family from Bihar, on their way to Goa, found themselves stranded overnight in the dense Bheemgad forest of Karnataka’s Belagavi district after blindly following Google Maps for navigation. The incident underscores the potential dangers of over-relying on technology without considering local terrain and conditions.

The Ordeal

The journey turned perilous when Google Maps suggested a shortcut through the rugged forest near Shiroli and Hemmadaga. Unaware of the challenges ahead, the family ventured approximately 8 kilometers into the wilderness. Soon, they lost mobile network coverage and were left without a clear path to exit the dense forest.

With nightfall, the family had no choice but to stay in their car amidst the intimidating sounds of the forest. The situation was both physically and mentally taxing, as they were isolated from any immediate help.

Increasing Concerns About Navigation Errors

This incident is not an isolated case. Last month in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district, three individuals lost their lives when Google Maps directed their car onto an under-construction bridge, causing it to plunge into a river. In another recent case, a navigation error led a car into a canal on the Bareilly-Pilibhit highway, injuring three passengers.

Lessons to Be Learned

These events highlight the risks of relying solely on GPS-based applications in unfamiliar territories, particularly in areas with rugged terrain or ongoing infrastructure issues. Travelers are urged to cross-check routes and remain vigilant, especially when exploring remote areas.

Key Takeaways

  • Always verify routes: Check with locals or review maps manually when traveling to unfamiliar areas.
  • Prepare for contingencies: Ensure that mobile phones are fully charged, and carry physical maps as backup.
  • Report errors: If you encounter dangerous navigation instructions, report them to the app provider to prevent future incidents.
