Record-breaking temperatures

Official data showed that at least 17 locations in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh had maximum temperatures of 45°C or higher on Saturday. In Rajasthan, temperatures reached 48.8°C in Barmer, 48°C in Jaisalmer, and 47.2°C in Bikaner.

Heat Wave Alerts and Red Warnings

A red alert has been issued for heatwaves in several states, including Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat, indicating a high risk of heat illness and heatstroke for people of all ages. The IMD warned that warm nighttime temperatures could exacerbate heat-related stress in some areas over the next four days.

Criticism in the midst of crisis

During the intense heatwave, Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee President Govind Singh Dotasra slammed Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma for allegedly ignoring the state’s water and power crises. Dotasra accused the BJP government of failing to provide adequate electricity and drinking water, causing concern among residents.

Impact on Lives

Tragically, the extreme heatwave in Rajasthan has claimed the lives of at least 12 people. Officials reported that at least 12 people died this week from suspected heatstroke, though the exact causes have yet to be determined.

Precautions are advised

Given the severity of the heatwave, residents in affected areas must take appropriate precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. Staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight, and staying indoors during peak heat hours are all recommended precautions during this time.
