Helicopter Joy Rides in Pune Gaining Popularity for Tourism and Pilgrimage Among Ordinary People
Helicopters, once extensively used for election campaigning, are now seeing a surge in demand for tourism and pilgrimage trips from Pune. With about five flights taking off daily, the aviation sector in Pune is witnessing significant economic activity. This trend has earned Pune the title of the “Helicopter Capital” of India, boasting the highest number of helicopters in the country.
During the recent election period, Maharashtra recorded over 6,000 helicopter flights, with many originating from Pune, along with others from neighboring states and Delhi. Post-elections, operators have introduced “Joy Rides,” offering scenic aerial tours of Pune. These rides, priced between ₹5,000 and ₹6,000 for a 5 to 10-minute journey, have gained popularity among passengers.
Aerial Pune Darshan and Pilgrimage Tours
The “Joy Rides” provide breathtaking views of iconic Pune landmarks such as Shaniwarwada, Dagdusheth Ganapati Mandir, and Mahatma Phule Mandai. Each helicopter carries up to six passengers, with departures from designated helipads.
In addition to city tours, there’s high demand for helicopter services to pilgrimage sites like Tuljapur, Pandharpur, Shirdi, Bhimashankar, and Shegaon. Fort tours and other scenic destinations are also popular. A one-hour helicopter rental costs between ₹1.6 lakh and ₹1.8 lakh, catering to those seeking a premium travel experience.
A Growing Aviation Trend
Captain Nitin Velde of Thumby Aviation highlighted the growing preference for helicopter travel, stating, “Traveling by helicopter is a pleasant experience, and it’s receiving an excellent response.” The initiative has added to Pune’s reputation as a hub for innovative aviation services.
With rising interest in luxury travel and religious tourism, Pune continues to lead in integrating helicopters into everyday travel experiences.
