Hurun India Rich List 2024: Gautam Adani replaces Mukesh Ambani as richest Indian, Shah Rukh Khan Enters List
Gautam Adani, with a family wealth of Rs 11.6 lakh crore has replaced Mukesh Ambani to climb to top position in the Hurun India Rich List 2024.
Notably India produced a billionaire every 5 days last year. Another interesting development is the entry of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan in this list.
The wealth calculations were based on wealth snapshot as on July 31, 2024.
“India is emerging as Asia’s wealth creation engine! While China saw a 25% decline in its number of billionaires, India experienced a 29% increase, reaching a record 334 billionaires,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, Founder and Chief Researcher, Hurun India.
A look at Hurun India Rich List 2024
Mukesh Ambani who has reigned as the richest Indian for many years, moved to no. 2 spot in 2024 with a wealth of Rs 1,014,700 crore. Third place is taken by Shiv Nadar Shiv Nadar & family of HCL Technologie with a wealth of Rs 314,000 crore this year.
Cyrus Poonawala, the Pune-based vaccine maker, holds the fourth position in the list, followed by Dilip Shanghvi of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries.
Youngest Billionaire in India
The youngest Indian to feature on the 2024 Hurun India rich list is 21-year-old Kaivalya Vohra of Zepto, a $5 bn quick commerce startup. His co-founder Aadit Palicha, 22, is the second youngest in the list.

Shah Rukh Khan Enters Hurun India Rich List
For the first time, Bollywood movie star Shah Rukh Khan made it to Hurun India Rich List, mainly due to the rising value of his holdings in the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders. Members from the entertainment industry on Hurun India Rich List added Rs 40,500 crores in just one year, with seven new entrants.
The number of billionaires in India now stands at 334, a six-fold increase since the list’s inception 13 years ago.
State and City Wise Wealth Distribution in India
Maharashtra tops the list with 470 entries followed by Delhi and Gujarat at 213 and 129 entries respectively.
If you look at city wise rankings, Mumbai is the billionaire capital of India with 386 entries and 92 billionaires followed by New Delhi and Hyderabad at 217 and 104 respectively.
Mumbai has emerged as the top billionaire capital of Asia, leaving Beijing behind.
Around the world, one is considered a billionaire if he/she has amassed a wealth of one billion dollars (not rupees or any other currency), which roughly equals to 8,386 crore in Indian rupees, based on current dollar to rupee conversion rates.
