State cabinet on Wednesday has approved to increase the fine for illegal cutting of trees from 1000 to 50,000 rupees.

The decision further states that any tools used for cutting trees and vehicles or boats for transporting them will also be confiscated. An amendment to Section 4 of the Maharashtra Tree Felling (Regulation) Act will be made, and an ordinance will be introduced to enforce this change.

The state government is working on a number of initiatives to expand the state’s green cover. Activist Zoru Bhathena said that existing laws already have strict provisions for illegal tree cutting, including fines and imprisonment. “But how many people have been punished over the years? Practically none,” Bhathena remarked, highlighting the need for better enforcement.

The Forest Survey of India reports that during 2015, tree planting initiatives in Maharashtra have added 2,550 square kilometers of new greenery to the state’s non-forest areas. In terms of mangrove forest growth, the state leads the nation.

The new aims to discourage illegal tree cutting and improve the protection of Maharashtra’s green cover. The state government believes that higher penalties will improve compliance to regulations and promote environmental protection.
