Indian Railways plans to introduce 10,000 non-air-conditioned coaches by 2025-26, with 53% being general coaches, to cater to the traveling needs of common passengers.

Seasonal variations and rising passenger volume impact the dynamic demands for rail service, which are factored into the annual production. In keeping with regulations, officials said that 4,485 coaches—across a range of models, including pantry cars, high-capacity parcel vans, seating-cum-luggage rake coaches, and sleeper coaches—will be produced this fiscal year.

The Indian Railways is likely to roll out about 10,000 non-air-conditioned coaches during this financial year and 2025-26, according to officials. About 53% of the 10,000 coaches would be general coaches, ensuring that the railways meets the travel needs of common passengers, they said.

The annual coach production program determines the type and number of coaches that must be produced in a given fiscal year based on the country’s dynamic demand for rail service, which is influenced by seasonal fluctuations and an increase in passenger traffic.

In current financial year, the numbers for Indian Railways’ coach production program are as follows:

  • 4,485 coaches will be manufactured, with 2,605 general coaches, including Amrit Bharat general coaches
  • 1,470 non-AC sleeper coaches, including Amrit Bharat sleeper coaches
  • 323 seating-cum-luggage rake (SLR) coaches, including Amrit Bharat SLR coaches
  • 32 high capacity parcel vans and 55 pantry cars
