India’s metro network is expanding rapidly, aimed at reducing congestion in major cities and making public transport more convenient. The availability of metro services in major cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Kolkata is having a positive impact on traffic as well as the environment.

Currently, a total of 966 km of metro network is operational in India, and another 656 km is under construction in various cities. Till 2014, only 248 km of metro lines were operational in India, which has now increased to 945 km in 21 cities. With the recent expansion of the Purple Line of Bengaluru Metro, this figure has reached 851 km, and with upcoming projects, this number will cross 1,100 km.

Apart from this, metro has also expanded in other cities like Lucknow, Jaipur, Noida, and Agra, which is easing traffic and people are able to save time.

Future plans

The Government of India aims to expand the metro network to about 2,000 km in the next five to seven years. With this expanded network, India ranks third among the countries with the largest metro network globally and may soon overtake the US as well. In addition, new RRTS corridors are also planned on Delhi-Meerut, Gurugram-Manesar, and Sonipat-Panipat routes, making commuting between cities in the NCR region more seamless.

India’s metro network is at a critical juncture in its evolution, where greater investments, modern technological advancements, and local metro coach production have given it a new identity on the global stage. This development is not only easing urban traffic but also providing environmental benefits.
