More than 13,000 trains run every day in India, but there is one train among them which is completely free for its passengers for the last 75 years. Yes, you heard it right! This train gives all its passengers the opportunity to travel without a ticket.

Bhakra-Nangal Train: A unique example of history and tradition This unique train covers a distance of 13 kilometers between Nangal in Punjab and Bhakra in Himachal Pradesh. On this route, the train passes through the Sutlej River and the scenic Shivalik Hills. This train was started in 1948 to transport laborers and construction material during the construction of the Bhakra-Nangal Dam. In 1953, American diesel engines were installed in it, which still run the train today. The simplicity of the train and the wooden bench seats reflect its historical importance.

Why is this train free?

The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has decided to continue the free service of this train in honour of its historical significance. However, it costs around 18 to 20 litres of fuel every hour to run the train. But this train is not just a means of transport but a living example of tradition and history.
