Maharashtra’s first AI-driven intelligent traffic management system goes live on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

Mumbai/Pune, July 19, 2024: First AI-Based Traffic Intelligent Management System (ITMS) in Maharashtra has gone live on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Friday. It aims to streamline traffic and enhance road safety for vehicles and their occupants.

Key Features of the AI-Based Traffic Intelligent Management System:

  • Automated Traffic Violation Detection: The system can automatically detect various traffic violations, facilitating the issuance of e-challans.
  • Vehicle Plate Recognition: Enhances enforcement efficiency by quickly identifying violators.
  • Improved Incident Response: Prompt identification and reporting of broken down vehicles to reduce prolonged traffic congestion.
  • Extensive Surveillance: Over 200 AI-enabled CCTV cameras will monitor traffic along the 95-kilometer expressway.

The AI-Based Traffic Intelligent Management System will be monitored by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) from a control room located in Lonavala. This hi-tech system is expected to greatly reduce traffic-related issues and improve the driving experience on this iconic freeway. On a average, approximately 40,000 vehicles use the expressway daily, and the numbers goes up as high as 60,000 on weekends.
