Pune’s historic Empress Botanical Garden is set to host its much-anticipated annual flower show from January 24 to January 27, 2025. Organized by the Agri-Horticulture Society of Western India since 1890, this vibrant event will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., offering a spectacular celebration of nature, creativity, and community participation.

The flower show will feature a diverse array of floral displays, including artistic arrangements, bonsai trees, and Japanese-style floral decorations. This year’s main attractions include intricately crafted bonsai displays and a dedicated section showcasing innovative pot displays and newly designed landscapes.

The event will be inaugurated by Dr. Suhas Diwase, Settlement Commissioner and Director of Land Records, on January 24 at 12 noon. Event coordinators Suresh Pingle and Anupama Barve emphasized the unique elements of this year’s exhibition during a recent press conference, highlighting the artistic and horticultural diversity on display.

Nursery Owners and Participants from Across the Country Nursery owners from Pune, Kolhapur, Sangli, Nashik, and Andhra Pradesh, along with other regions across India, will participate in the event. This wide representation ensures visitors can explore a rich variety of plants, flowers, and gardening techniques while also purchasing saplings and gardening essentials.

Competitions for All Age Groups The event will also include special competitions to engage both children and adults. On January 12, a painting and handwriting competition for schoolchildren, including those with special needs, will take place, with over 1,000 students expected to participate. Gardening enthusiasts and older adults can take part in competitions featuring artistic flower arrangements, fruit and vegetable displays, and unique potted plants.

Rich History and Legacy of Empress Garden Located in Kavade Mala, Ghorpadi, Empress Botanical Garden spans 39 acres of lush greenery and biodiversity. Originally known as Soldiers’ Gardens during British India, it served as a recreational area for off-duty soldiers. It was later renamed in honor of Queen Victoria. The garden currently houses over 180-200 tree species and a dedicated 5-acre nursery that cultivates saplings, available for public purchase.

The Agri-Horticulture Society of Western India, established in 1830, continues its mission to promote environmental awareness and a love for nature through events like this flower show.
