A 100-foot-tall billboard collapsed in Mumbai after a dust storm and heavy rain, killing at least 14 people and injuring 74 others. The illegal billboard landed on a petrol pump at the Cheddanagar Junction in Ghatkopar.

“Sixty-four people have been admitted to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar. One is in critical condition, and a total of four people have died in this incident. Additionally, we have learned that four others are said to have died,” said BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the disaster site and inspected the search and rescue operations. He announced five lakh compensation for the kin of the deceased and treatment of all the injured at government expense. He said that the municipal administration has been instructed to investigate the incident and file a case of culpable homicide against the culprits. Also, to prevent such accidents from happening again, the chief minister ordered structural audit of all hoardings in Mumbai and to remove dangerous hoardings immediately.

Flight operations at Mumbai airport were suspended for an hour on Monday and local trains were delayed amid unseasonal rains, accompanied by a dust storm. Soon after the storm, Mumbai traffic police said that vehicular movement was slow at Pooja Junction (Wadala) North Bound and Freeway Tunnel Trombay South due to the fall of the hoarding.
