Highway Traffic Management System (HTMS) installation is in the final stages and will soon be deployed to monitor traffic on Mumbai-Pune Expressway using AI Cameras.

The necessary preparation for this project is in the final stage. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) claimed that it will be possible to reduce the number of accidents by implementing this system.

The Highway Traffic Management System is an AI based traffic management system which uses multiple cameras located at strategic locations to capture errant driving behaviors such as over-speeding, lane cutting, usage of mobile while driving, unauthorized halting on the expressway etc..

Mumbai-Pune Expressway is a winding road passing through many twists and turns. There are ghats, waterfalls, and other scenic spots. As a result, travelers on the route stop their vehicles on the roadside. Haphazard parking of vehicles at restaurants or other places is leading to accidents on busy roads.

It is also proposed to provide facilities for stopping vehicles at certain distances along the highway. Two special halts are proposed on the ghat for heavy vehicles. Tea facilities and toilets are also provided at these stops. At present, after climbing the ghat, heavy vehicles stop on the highway, so often there are collisions with the vehicles following them. This incidence is increasing. Against this backdrop, these special stops are being created.

“When going from Pune to Mumbai and while coming from Mumbai to Pune, various works are going on under HTMS at regular intervals. These works are in the final stage. After completion of these works, unruly traffic will be under control. The number of accidents will definitely come down,” said Rahul Vasaikar, superintending engineer, MSRDC.
