Mumbai-Pune Hyperloop: High-Speed Travel Between Cities Could Start by 2029
Mumbai and Pune may soon witness a transformative leap in transportation with the Hyperloop—a high-speed, inter-city transport mode expected to become operational by 2029. Touted as the next-generation mass-mobility solution, Hyperloop promises faster, safer, and greener travel, bridging the two cities in under 25 minutes.
A Glimpse Into the Technology
Pune-based Quintrans Hyperloop is spearheading the development of this ambitious project. According to Pranay Luniya, CEO and co-founder of Quintrans, the company has made significant strides in prototyping and commercializing essential Hyperloop technologies.
“We’ve developed a novel patent-pending concrete tube and commercialized a Linear Motor capable of moving over one tonne of payload. Additionally, we’ve built one of India’s first custom track-based Linear Motor controllers in-house,” said Luniya.
The next focus for Quintrans is creating efficient magnetic levitation modules to support similar payload capacities. These advancements will pave the way for a commercial Hyperloop track, initially deployed for cargo transport by 2029. Passenger services, however, may take slightly longer to launch.
Affordability and Appeal
With an estimated ticket price of ₹1,000-₹1,500, the Hyperloop could strike a balance between cost and convenience. “A direct Pune-Mumbai flight costs ₹3,000, while travel on the Vande Bharat train costs ₹750. Hyperloop offers the best of both worlds,” Luniya noted. The technology is poised to redefine how people commute, offering unparalleled speed without compromising affordability.
As the world looks for innovative solutions to urban mobility challenges, the Mumbai-Pune Hyperloop is shaping up to be a game-changer for Indian transportation.
