Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved the highly anticipated pod taxi project for Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). This decision, finalized during MMRDA’s 282nd executive committee meeting, marks a major leap towards improving last-mile connectivity in one of Mumbai’s busiest business districts.

Project Overview

The pod taxi system, managed by Sai Green Mobility in partnership with M/s Ultra PRT (the operator behind the Heathrow Airport pod taxis), is set to revolutionize transportation in BKC. The initiative will cater to an impressive 400,000 to 600,000 daily commuters, addressing the growing need for efficient and congestion-free travel solutions.

Pod Taxi Route and Specifications

Spanning 8.80 km, the pod taxi route will feature 38 strategically placed stations throughout BKC. The autonomous pods, designed to accommodate up to six passengers, will travel at speeds of up to 40 km/h. To ensure a smooth and continuous flow of passengers, pods will arrive every 15 to 30 seconds, connecting key transport hubs such as Bandra and Kurla stations seamlessly.

Addressing Congestion and Connectivity

With BKC poised for increased footfall due to major projects like the bullet train and new commercial developments, the pod taxi system is poised to alleviate congestion and enhance connectivity. This initiative is expected to offer a critical solution to the area’s transport challenges, improving overall mobility and reducing travel time for daily commuters.

Fare Structure and Financial Details

The fare for the pod taxi service is set at Rs 21 per km, with a planned annual increase of 4% to maintain operational sustainability. This fare structure, informed by current auto and bus user surveys, aims to strike a balance between affordability and the financial viability of the system.

The project’s estimated cost is Rs 1,016.34 crore, with a completion timeline of three years. Under a revenue-sharing model with MMRDA, the operator will manage the system for 30 years, ensuring long-term maintenance and operational excellence.

Technical and Feasibility Insights

The decision to implement the pod taxi system follows a comprehensive techno-economic feasibility study (TEFS), which evaluated global transportation technologies and was reviewed by Tata Consulting Engineers. The study endorsed the pod taxi system for its adaptability to the region’s topography and its capability to meet increasing traffic demands.

A Vision for the Future

“This project is a pivotal step towards enhancing urban mobility in one of Mumbai’s key business hubs,” said Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, Commissioner of MMRDA. “The pod taxi system will significantly improve last-mile connectivity, reduce congestion, and provide a modern, efficient mode of transport for Mumbai’s daily commuters.”

With its advanced technology and strategic implementation, the pod taxi system promises to be a game-changer for Mumbai’s transportation landscape, offering a glimpse into the future of urban mobility.
